Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB)
The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) is an undergraduate medical degree that prepares students for a career as a medical practitioner. It is designed to provide comprehensive training in medical science and clinical skills, focusing on developing competent, compassionate, and ethical doctors.
The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) curriculum was accredited in May 2015, which allows KCU to recruit and train students in the MBChB program. This program is both theoretical and practical. Research and Laboratory placements are mandatory.

Program Structure
This depicts allocation of time to various curricula activities. The activities and their symbols are
as follows;
1 Lecture hour (LH) = 1 contact hour; 2 Tutorial hours (TH) = 1 contact hour; 2 Practical hours (PH) = 1 contact hour; 2 Clinical hours (CH) = 1 contact hour; 1 Credit Unit (CU) = 15 contact hours.
Program Objectives
The program aims to produce graduates who are able to:
- Produce knowledgeable, ethical, caring and competent graduates, who will promote holistic health.
- Produce all round graduates with essential skills to create jobs/wealth through innovation, entrepreneurship, scientific discovery, diversity and professional growth.
- Impart medical knowledge, attitudes and skills that will enable graduates to practice ethical and evidence -based health care with a high level of skill and social responsibility.
- Produce graduates that can carry out research, disseminate and use the findings.
- Produce graduates with moral re-armament who have acquired exemplary steadfastness to principles and moral values so as to witness to a life of honesty and integrity.
Target groups
- Candidate with Valid A’ Level Certificate.
- Holders of Diploma in Medical Sciences such as Radiographers, Physiotherapists, Anaesthetic officers, Clinical Ophthalmic officers, Clinical Orthopaedic officers, Environmental Health Officers, Public Health Dental Assistant, Public Health Assistants, Dispensers, Uganda Registered Nurses, Uganda Registered Midwives, Clinical officers (formerly called medical assistants).
- Holders of Bachelor Degrees in Sciences such as Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BNS), Bachelor of Medical Radiography (BMR), Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences (BBS), Bachelor of Biomedical Laboratory Sciences (BBLS).
The duration of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree program shall extend over a period of not less than five (5) years. Each academic year shall be divided into two (2) semesters and a recess term except the last year of study. A semester shall consist of a period of instruction lasting for seventeen (17) weeks inclusive of two (2) weeks of examinations. Therefore, the duration of the MBChB program shall be equivalent to ten (10) semesters of biomedical, pathology and clinical courses. At the maximum, the program shall not extend beyond fourteen (14) uninterrupted semesters i.e., without counting officially approved.
Direct Entry
In order to be eligible for direct entry into the MBChB program, a candidate must have;
- Sat for the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or its equivalent with credit passes in five (5) approved subjects obtained prior to sitting for Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).
- Sat and passed the UACE or its equivalent with at least two (2) principal passes in Chemistry and Biology(with minimum grades of A in both Biology and Chemistry) and at least one (1) subsidiary pass in either Physics or Mathematics.
- In order for holders of school certificate and final high school marks graded in percentages and average points such as Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda and Burundito be eligible for direct entry into the MBChB program, shall have their grades first equated before seeking admission at King Ceasor University.
Holders of Diploma in Medical Sciences.
In order to be eligible for admission into the MBChB program, diploma entry candidates must possess a diploma with a minimum CGPA of 3. 5 or its equivalent in a health-related field.
In addition the candidate must have the following;
- ‘A’ level certificate
- Be registered with the relevant professional council of the home country.
- Working experience of not less than 2 years in those relevant fields.
Holders of Bachelor Degrees in Sciences.
In order to be eligible for admission into the MBChB degree program, degree entry candidate must;
- Posses‘A’ level certificate prior to admission to the degree level
- Possess a bachelor degree in science disciplines at least at the level of second-class lower division or its equivalent.
- Possess the above qualification from a recognized institution of higher learning in his/her country, which is recognized by the relevant council.
Mature Age Entry Scheme
A candidate must sit and pass the Mature Age Entrance Examinations in aptitude and specialised knowledge set and marked by King Ceasor University. He/she must also satisfy all other University requirements for the admission to the University under the Mature Age Entry Scheme.
At the end of the program graduates will be able to;
- Diagnose, investigate and manage common medical conditions in the population.
- Lead, manage and supervise health care teams at the appropriate level.
- Carry out research embracing community imvolvement, disseminate and use the findings for community development.
- Contribute effectively to health promotion, disease prevention and early intervention.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of the healthcare interventions used in their practice.
- Communicate effectively with individuals, families, communities and authorities.
- Utilize Information Communication Technology (ICT) to promote health service delivery.
- Provide health services in an ethical manner, showing appropriate attitude, professionalism and integrity.
- Apply the process of critical thinking and lifelong learning in health care.
- Apply evidence-based knowledge in dealing with health issues.
Tuition fees for privately sponsored students shall be 3000 USD per semester. All students are required to pay other functional and non-functional fees as may be defined on admission.
